Volunteering at the Gleaners

Volunteering at The Gleaners in Smithville

Hi  Derek Tara Mathew Morgan and Kayla

This seems to be the way to communicate now, everyone has his/her own phone. With one click you can get the email save it and read it at your own convenience. Please pass this story on to Kayla.

The work of The Gleaners just blows me away! Somebody thought of the idea. Then people got together and did it! Right here is Smithville is a brand new 2 million dollar building that processes and dries surplus produce, packages and sends it free to feed hungry men women and children in the world.

Farmers,Greenhouses,Food Markets and Stores donate their surplus product.

Volunteers come and work in the cutting room. Then the produce ( we have been working  with potatoes carrots asparagus, peppers red and green, zucinni parsnips eggplant and onions ) is sent to the dicer, cut into one quarter inch cubes, put on drying trays that go into the drier for eight hours, then the dried product is put in plastic bags, family sized, and sealed. It is then ready to be shipped.

650000 servings went to Eswatini ( do you know where that is? it used to be called Swaziland ).A boatload has gone to Haiti.

Grandma and I have been volunteering with The Gleaners since May.We both go on Tuesdays and she goes again on Thursday mornings. We have met many new friends who also volunteer. They come from all over the peninsula .I have met people from Niagara Falls St. Catharines Fonthill Jordan Vineland Beamsville Grimsby Stoney Creek Hamilton Hagersville Dunnville and others right here in Smithville.

A lot are Dutch.Everyone has a story to tell. Many came from Holland in the 1950’s as young children with their parents. As you are working side by side you share conversations. All are friendly and happy to volunteer. We all enjoy the one half hour break at 10:00 with tea coffee and cookies.

This September Newsletter explains a lot more about The Gleaners and why we like to volunteer.

I never knew of Streef Produce Ltd and their 3000 acre farm at Princton Ontario just a little over an hour’s drive from Smithville. They have donated 175000 pounds of potatoes and sweet potatoes to The Niagara Christian Gleaners and The Ontario Christian Gleaners in Cambridge Ontario.

Hope you enjoy reading this September Newsletter from The Gleaners and learn something new too.
